COPPA 2026: Why AI Tools That Store Your Kids' Data Are About to Have a Very Bad Week

Six days from now, on April 22, 2026, the Federal Trade Commission will flip the switch on enforcement of its updated Children's Online Privacy Protection Act — and a lot of AI companies are quietly bracing for impact.

What Actually Changed

The original COPPA, passed in 1998, was designed for a web of simple websites and online games. Here's what's new:

Biometrics are personal information now. Voiceprints, facial templates, and similar identifiers are now explicitly covered under COPPA's definition of personal information. Any AI tool that processes voice or video from children is squarely in scope.
