Privacy: what actually differs
ChatGPT links every conversation to your OpenAI account. Even in guest mode, your IP address and prompt text reach OpenAI's servers. GPTAnon's architecture is different by design: prompts travel through GPTAnon’s API and OpenRouter to the selected model provider, no conversation is added to a saved GPTAnon chat history, and anonymous use requires no account at all. Here's why it matters for specific use cases:
Medical questions
Asking an AI about symptoms, medications, or mental health? With ChatGPT, that conversation is tied to your email. With GPTAnon, ordinary Chat is not added to a saved server-side transcript or linked to your identity. Pasted paid reviews have a separate encrypted recovery record for up to 24 hours.
Legal research
Discussing legal strategy, contracts, or disputes requires confidentiality. GPTAnon does not add the conversation to a saved server-side chat history.
Financial planning
Sharing income, debt, or investment details with an AI? GPTAnon does not add that conversation to a saved chat history or forward your account identity with the prompt. ChatGPT stores the conversation tied to your account by default.
Sensitive work
Journalists, researchers, and security professionals need tools with minimal data retention. GPTAnon keeps no saved ordinary-Chat transcript; paid-review recovery and operational records have separate retention. OpenRouter and the selected model provider have their own retention policies.
Training data: opt-out vs. opt-in
ChatGPT uses your conversations to train future OpenAI models by default. You can turn this off in Settings → Data controls → "Improve the model for everyone," but it requires a manual step per account, and the opt-out does not apply retroactively.
GPTAnon uses OpenRouter's API in no-training mode. This is an API-level setting, not a user-facing toggle — every request made through GPTAnon is automatically excluded from model training. There is no setting to forget to switch.
Frequently asked questions
Is GPTAnon using the same AI as ChatGPT?
When you select an active OpenAI model in GPTAnon, your prompt is routed to OpenAI via OpenRouter. The available selection is always shown in chat before you send.
Does ChatGPT's guest mode protect my privacy?
Partially. You don't need to create an account to use ChatGPT's guest mode, but OpenAI still receives your IP address and the full text of your prompt. There is no guest-mode equivalent of GPTAnon's anonymous routing, where the provider sees GPTAnon's shared gateway rather than your IP.
Can I opt out of ChatGPT training data collection?
Yes, but it requires a manual step. Go to Settings → Data controls and disable "Improve the model for everyone." This stops your future chats from being used for training, but the opt-out does not apply retroactively to conversations already submitted. GPTAnon's API-level no-training mode means there's nothing to opt out of.
Does GPTAnon support image generation?
Not currently. GPTAnon focuses on text-based AI chat and multi-model comparison workflows. If you need DALL-E image generation, ChatGPT is the better fit for that specific task.
Why is GPTAnon Pro the same price as ChatGPT Plus?
Both cost $20/month, but the coverage is different. ChatGPT Plus gives you OpenAI models only. GPTAnon Pro gives you the current active catalog in a single anonymous interface.
What does 'stateless gateway' mean?
GPTAnon's server acts as a routing layer. When you send a message, it's forwarded to the selected model provider in memory and the connection closes — nothing is written to a database. There is no chat history on GPTAnon's side to retrieve, retain, or hand over.
