ChatGPT Search: Temporary Helps, But It Is Not the Same as Anonymous

OpenAI's ChatGPT privacy controls are useful. OpenAI says Temporary Chats are not saved in your history, do not create memories, are not used to improve models, and may be kept for up to 30 days for safety.

Gemini: Human Review and Google Account Context Matter

Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says Gemini activity can be used to provide, improve, and protect services, including with human reviewers. Google also says reviewed feedback, associated conversations, and related data can be retained for up to three years, disconnected from your Google Account, and may not be deleted when you delete Gemini Apps activity.

That distinction matters. Deleting what you see in activity controls is not always the same as deleting every reviewed or retained copy.

Gemini is powerful, especially when connected to Google's broader ecosystem. But for private AI search, that ecosystem is exactly the tradeoff. Claude and Grok: Different Products, Same Privacy Question

Anthropic says Claude consumers can choose whether chats and coding sessions may be used to improve Claude. If that setting is enabled, Anthropic may retain de-identified data in training pipelines for up to five years. Deleted conversations are removed from back-end storage within 30 days, and Claude Incognito chats are not used for model improvement. Separate longer retention can apply to content flagged by trust-and-safety systems.

xAI says Grok users can turn model improvement off or use Private Chat, where available, so new conversations are not used for training. xAI also says a limited number of authorized personnel may review conversations for model improvement, security, misuse investigations, and legal compliance. Signed-out users in some regions may not receive the same training opt-out.
